Review by HM

Season 2, Side Mission 4 is, in my humble opinion, the best episode of NGC’s Side Mission series. Athena is a super-hot heroine, the plot is intriguing enough to sustain one’s interest, and I personally enjoyed watching Athena face off against not one, but two masked thugs.

I don’t want to give anything away about the storyline, so I’ll just say that the plot for this episode involves the contents of a mysterious envelope which may or may not contain a clue about the recent death of someone in the NGC story world. Athena wants answers, and her search has led her to the location of the video, and from there the story involves Athena’s attempts to acquire said information. She encounters a masked henchman, and one thing leads to another, and lots of fighting ensues—first involving Athena vs. one opponent, and then leading to a two-on-one situation (which I’m always in favor of…)

I found the fight choreography to be more along the lines of the best NGC episodes than I expected. There’s been some talk lately about some of the fighting in a few recent episodes perhaps not being quite up to the usual excellent NGC standards, and while there might be some truth to that, I did not find the fight scenes lacking here; in fact, I thought the fighting and editing was very well done. The henchmen are appropriately menacing, and Athena really finds herself in a tough situation and subjected to a variety of punches and kicks and holds. Fans of NGC’s work should thoroughly enjoy this episode.

Wow! this is THE best episode from NGC! Anyone saying otherwise is crazy! Great fight choreography, almost brutal, especially @ the 6 minute 40 second mark. Please, please, please bring more of that fast pace brutal fights. Ms. Catherine’s reactions are spot on, and seem so convincing, which brings that fight sequence to realistic levels. There’s plenty going on for such a short video, great mini-story.
One small question though; When will Athena win? She seems to be (always?) beaten/lossing in all the videos I’ve seen…
Anyways, please continue bringing top notch fight choreography like in this episode. This IS the best NGC video thus far!

  • Aug. 4, 2012 at 8:51 pm

    I recommend! Excellent actress.

  • Aug. 4, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Sounds promising, but I’m gonna have to be Johnny Specific and ask about the fights. Specifically, how long is the one-on-one fight – and does Athena actually lose that one, before the 2-on-1 stuff starts?

  • Aug. 4, 2012 at 11:37 pm

    @Sym: ***POSSIBLE SPOILERS****

There’s really 2 seperate one on one fight sequences. The first one lasts 1:15, and after a little back and forth, Athena dominates(including one particularly brutal move). The 2nd lasts a little over 2 minutes and is mostly back and forth, although Athena gets the worst of it somewhat.

I’d like to mention one element of this video that wasn’t mentioned in the review. Athena is very classy, almost regal, and the contrast between that and the thuggish, street type villains in this episode is incredibly appealing. Very nice effort from NGC.

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 3:00 am

I agree with the positive comments. I haven’t bought the last few NGC releases due to a perceived lack of fighting and beatdowns but I bought this one as it looked promising and I have no regrets. Just more of the same in future would do nicely.

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 4:16 am

@kingles Thanks for the breakdown. I guess I’ll skip this one then – No reflection on the video, the reviews and comments above clearly illustrate this one’s worth buying if it’s what you’re into. But I’m still waiting for that ‘proper’ one-sided fight/beatdown, rather than back and forth 1-on-1 fights, or a (presumably) one-sided 2-on-1 fight, which isn’t something I’m interested in (Odd as it may sound, I always consider 2 on 1 fights to be LESS dominant, simply cos the odds are naturally in the bad guy’s favour).

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 4:56 am

This one is superb and I second what @bert said – I love the character of Athena and her classy attitude. I’d also like to mention that I received superb customer service from NGC who went out of their way to answer my query. A fantastic company on every level.

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 6:47 am

you would be mad to skip this one, Athena is dominated in the one on one fight and then completely destroyed in the double team. Also there is a part where one villain goes berserk and gives her 9 blows in a row.

I hear you George, but as with any video, it’s just a matter of personal preference. I’ve never had any interest in 2 (or more!)-on-1 fights. For me, they don’t really qualify as a ‘fight’ at that point. I know it sounds like splitting hairs, but I’ve always drawn a line between a heroine losing a fight and a heroine simply being beaten down. I love the former, but have no interest in the latter

I dunno, looking at it deeper, I think it’s as much about the psychology of a defeated heroine for me, as it is the actual action. Look at it this way… a heroine losing a one-on-one fight means that she is being outmatched, being defeated by someone better than her. But a heroine being defeated by 2 or more guys, well at that point she’s simply outnumbered – Yeah, she’s still taking a beating, but it’s not about her opponent(s) being better than her, but simply that there are more of ’em.

And, just to clarify, this is just me thinking out loud and explaining my own preferences. Don’t take this as any kind of rant or critique of this video, or me saying what I think should have happened in it. As I’ve said, the comments from everyone here speak for themselves. This is clearly a very good video. It’s just not for me.

Definitely the best of the side missions so far. Though the best part of the whole package might have been the episode 6 pics!

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 8:15 am

Another great release by NGC. I hope we continue to see more Athena in this season. She has been one of my favorites! A great fight video.

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 9:21 am

AMAZING episode, i think that is the best with the bluebird side mission too. I love how you can feel the intensity of every punch. The actress and her reactions were great. Its a great episode for the belly punches fans as me also. NGC you can adress this mission as a reference for what i would love to see as fan. Thank you for such amazing job! Nice pictures also. Athena is beutiful
PS: I see the extra of celestia which looks good but when are we going to have a fail safe sister episode? I missed that series

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 9:28 am

Any ko’s for the heroine ?

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 10:29 am

Just take a look at the last image at the top of this thread.

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 11:34 am

As always with NGC, this side mission is well executed. Athena looks great. Her character seems to have really developed as well. She seems to be the heroine who’s not bad in a fight, but her real strength is her ability to heal. Long term that seems to deliver excellent plot line possibilities, should you protect the healer who may be able to save many other heroines even if it means at the expense of losing a heroine who is more valuable in a fight? I like that Athena has real clear strengths and weaknesses.

As far as the episode itself goes. It’s great. It is clearly the best of the side missions. It is also the only side mission in which the heroine is defeated. To which I say “KUDOS”.

We are also treated to a full body shot of the defeated heroine. To which I say “DOUBLE KUDOS”.

Athena holds her own early, but she ends up being knocked down, picked up and knocked down again. To which I say “TRIPLE KUDOS”.

I recommend this episode and feel NGC did a great job giving the fans something many of us have been asking for. Of course I would have liked a longer more drawn out beat down, (but I always say that.) I really can’t complain. For the price of this video it offers tons of good stuff. It has a very high BPDR value. (Beatdown per dollar ratio.)

If I may make one small constructive comment, the only thing I might have suggested was fading to black on Athena out of it on the floor defeated. Not because we’d like to see more of her lying there, (which of course I would) but because I think it would have made for excellent discussion board fodder. We could have all been wondering if she’s dead. Will she recover? Will she be captured as she lies there? I think it would have been a cooler more mysterious ending. Then of course the next time you shoot a film with Athena you could have shown the part where she gets up and walks down the hall to start the next film, rather than as an ending to this one. Anyway, it’s not a big deal, it’s just a suggestion.

Congratulations and thank you to NGC for another great video.

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 2:23 pm

    Jobber Lover,
I love that ending idea. But I’m really glad Next Global Crisis didn’t end it that way. Because I have a ton to do this week and I would have spent the whole week debating on this forum whether or not Athena was dead or just pining.

I also agree with you that there is good value of peril for the dollar here. BTW Is BPDR a recognized acronym?

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 5:02 pm

I enjoyed this one. I really liked Athena’s reaction to the belly punches. She took a lot, so I think it would have been a little better to see her give a harder reaction after every blow. Personally I like to add more time time in between the blows. So it can give her plenty of time to have a stronger/better reaction, like double over, hold her stomach, or try and catch her breath. It would add so much more to the punches, like the last punch she took which made her cry out louder and fall to the floor. I liked that a lot. More of those punches I would have preferred. Major props for the fighting choreography. I really enjoyed when the Darkhearts villain went Bruce Li and dished out a ton punches to our lovely Athena’s face and abdomen, that was awesome. Good job NGC.

So what’s next after this, Episode 6? (Which looks very promising by the way) Or a Fail-Safe Sisters installment? You cant go wrong with either one.

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 5:23 pm

I am very pleased that people have enjoyed this video so much. I have to say that a lot of the credit should go to Athena herself as she really does a first rate job of reactions to fight moves and generally playing a superheroine. She needs almost no direction, a real natural. She always looks good but on that day in particular as well she was simply stunning and we’re very pleased with her.

The idea as it stands is to get Episode 6 out next which went well when we shot it a month ago. I’m actually pretty tired from today’s shoot which was a Fail-Safe Sisters day, frankly I don’t think I’ve ever come away from a shoot happier in terms of what we shot. I’m feeling very good about what we will have for you in the next 2 months.

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 5:42 pm

Hey NGC, i don’t want to force you to spoil the surprise but … may we know if the FFS superheroine is a new actress or … ? (since the FFS are 5 superheroines and this should be the 3rd episode, i assume she’s a new character anyway)

New villainess too =) ? Would be great 2 vs 1 like this Athena video :)

  • Aug. 5, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Have always loved Athena as a character and glad to see she now knows how to fight instead of just being the “healer” of the group. Great fight scenes and nice blows taken by all. Athena is beautiful and takes a nice pounding at the end. Really hoping to see more of her in future releases, but this was the best side mission yet, at least in my opinion. The villain costumes were great to, love the idea of a secondary like villain with a local gang being supplied with the strength drugs. They could be a real thorn in the side of the heroines.

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 5:30 am

@Markko – Oh I think I’ve said enough on what is coming up, but hopefully you will enjoy it when it comes.

@Redmountain – I’m pleased you liked the gang concept and I know our costume department will be pleased to read your comments.

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 10:10 am

9 low blows in a row? From Next Global Crisis? I got the feeling that they weren’t really into doing low blows, that they weren’t comfortable with them.. I could be wrong I guess.

Question: are these shots delivered from a guy or lady? Personally I’m only into F/F lowblows, but to each their own.

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 10:45 am

@Agent E-45 – I’m not sure you’ve read it correctly. The only comment bearing a relation to what you have said is “9 blows in a row” by George. This is entirely MvF.

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 11:16 am

Ahh… embarrassment is mine. I’ve got a one-track mind unfortunately. Apologies!

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 12:09 pm

    “When will Athena win?”

Hopefully never. All the other heroines do enough winning in their fights.

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 1:21 pm

Brilliant episode, maybe my favorite one yet. Heroine fights hard against the odds and loses and takes a pounding.

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Loved this one! I’m continually amazed at how much NGC can cram into one ten minute episode. Athena is drop-dead beautiful, and also manages to carry herself with a tremendous amount of dignity…and the masked bad guy brought a sense of genuine menace. This one ranks among the best short-form SH movies I’ve ever seen…
I did have one question regarding the continuity: are all the Elite Force heroines now ‘underground’? Conversely, does Red Mist now have official government backing? I think this is the case, but not entirely sure…
    Anyway, slam-bang episode!

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 1:59 pm

@Gil – Thanks, really nice comments to read. I’m pleased you enjoyed it so much. To answer your question: Red Mist have the backing of multiple governments. As far as the public are concerned Red Mist took over Elite Force’s global protection job due to the perceived criminality and corruption within Elite Force. This is why any heroine related to Elite Force is being hunted. Of course the public have been misled, but only we know how that has happened.

  • Aug. 6, 2012 at 5:18 pm

Athena is more punching in belly?

  • Aug. 8, 2012 at 11:37 am

Don’t have time to go into specifics at the moment, but just wanted to say that I LOVED the new Side Mission! In my eyes, as good as SM 2, and I’m a massive Bluebird fan! Everything was there – nice, interesting side story, sharp camera work, fast paced action with a little bit of variety, some lovely touches in regards effects…and not forgetting the simply amazing Athena! Well done guys!

  • Aug. 8, 2012 at 12:09 pm

    NGC I have a question.
Now that Batman Rises is going low key… will you be borrowing any ideas to apply them to your movies?

  • Aug. 8, 2012 at 4:17 pm

@Ghost999 – Could you elaborate on that? I don’t really understand what you mean.

  • Aug. 8, 2012 at 4:27 pm

TDKR has furious fight scene with the antagonist against the hero. Really violent. I was wondering if that particular fight scene could be applied in any of your movies?

  • Aug. 8, 2012 at 4:33 pm

Oh I see. Well the stuff we shot this past weekend has above average attrition for our productions. It is really for you to judge. I will do most things if they have a strong enough context.

  • Aug. 8, 2012 at 5:19 pm

Yes, and you better believe that I enjoyed it! You seem to have got the format pretty much spot on now guys, with just the right mix of ‘behind the scenes’, ‘posed character ‘ and ‘action’! The photo set was another of what made this release so great!

  • Aug. 8, 2012 at 5:22 pm

“The photo set was just another piece of what made this release so great!”

  • Aug. 10, 2012 at 3:27 pm

This one is full of amazing moments: Athena “embarrassing” the first thug by breaking his arm, the second thug pushing her back and pinning her up against the wall, Athena narrowly avoiding a super punch which smashes the wall instead, the flurry of punches which floors her, the subsequent two-on-one fight, the slaps and knockout kick… many many great things and all sold to perfection by the actress. Kudos! Also can’t wait for Celestia, when will that be do you think?

  • Aug. 10, 2012 at 6:45 pm

@Richard – The next release starring Celestia will be in two weeks with any luck. I’ve had a fair few messages about the trouble she is in…

  • Aug. 11, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Just a quick shout of thanks to NGC. In addition to producing absolutely first rate videos, your customer service is exemplary.

  • Aug. 11, 2012 at 4:29 pm

Lol, thanks Bert, although I consider it the bare minimum! I try and deal with things as soon as I see them, but sometimes I’m in bed, which I know angered someone once!

  • Aug. 17, 2012 at 10:58 am

this actress has a NICE voice

  • Aug. 19, 2012 at 7:41 am

As we get close to the monumental 6th Episode I felt some of you might want to read about the Season 2 storyline to this point. In the last week I’ve written a 3-part synopsis of it so you know exactly where you are. There are some spoilers, so be careful:

  • Aug. 24, 2012 at 6:51 am

With just hours before we release to the list I felt I should post here something I posted on the website blog about Episode 6 spoilers. Don’t worry, there are none in this post:

“Episode Six contains big surprises which we highly recommend viewers discover for themselves as the story unfolds. We planned these developments before Season 2 even began, and have kept them a closely guarded secret until now. Therefore we have prepared a “spoiler free” trailer for those of you who wish to get the most enjoyment out of this episode, and for those of you who want to know exactly what they are getting, there is a “spoiler” trailer. Again, if you are already planning on buying this episode – and it’s an exciting one, we can assure you – we HIGHLY recommend you only watch the “spoiler free” trailer…

Also, we would very much appreciate it if you would refrain from posting spoiler comments online, at least for a few hours so that fellow discount list members have had a proper chance to experience the episode “un-spoiled”. Thanks!”

  • Aug. 24, 2012 at 10:50 am

I know that NGC had asked for people to post ‘spoilers’ on here but I just have to! The big surprise is that somehow, NGC have raised the bar even higher! One word – EPIC!!!!

  • Aug. 24, 2012 at 10:51 am

Ooops! I missed the word ‘not’ out, obviously!

  • Aug. 24, 2012 at 10:57 am

LOL! Yes to reiterate, please do not post spoilers here. The review will probably be out over the weekend and that will obviously give things away. I’d just like to give people a full day to have a surprise if they would like one.

  • Aug. 24, 2012 at 11:27 am

Obviously just joking about spoiling things guys, and whilst I’ll wait to heap praise on this Episode in the ‘official thread’, I just had to say how damn amazing it was! Superb work again guys!

  • Aug. 24, 2012 at 12:10 pm

I love it! great episode! Also my congratulations to the people which do the costume design
