Cult Retro, the producers of the animated Yankee Girl vs. The Colossal Cossack, have released a new video, Nyoka the Jungle Girl Rides Again. I was very impressed with the company’s animated Yankee Girl video, and although Nyoka is a live-action affair, I’m equally impressed.
After a brief sequence which introduces the main storyline via title cards, we meet our heroine, Nyoka Gordon (played by Nicola Rae), already in the midst of an extremely perilous situation. She’s in some kind of ancient dungeon, chained to a table as a giant, bladed pendulum swings back and forth above her, slowly descending as she struggles to free herself. What can I say? What an awesome scene, very well done by Cult Retro with ambitious special effects and good editing. It’s a nice throwback to the serials of yesteryear (that many of us are too young to remember—I prefer to think of it as an update to the kind of peril Batman and Robin regularly faced in the 60s television show). I was really impressed with this sequence, and I think it’s the highlight of the episode. The special effects are impressive (if not absolutely convincing, but who cares?) and I rarely see this level of ambition in a video of this genre. (The producers may not consider this a “heroine peril” video, necessarily, and they may be right, even though it shares a lot of the same elements.)
After this sequence concludes, it’s on to the more Earth-bound (i.e., conventionally filmed) adventure, which is still pretty good in its own right. There’s some plot exposition in which the bad guys explain their evil plans, and the performances are pretty good, particularly that of the main bad guy, The Crimson Skull. I’ll leave the details of the storyline for those of you who purchase the video, but I absolutely have to mention something:
Have you ever seen a video in this genre that features a horse chase? Nyoka gives us a sequence in which our heroine chases the evil Crimson Skull on horseback. For real. The actors are actually riding real horses. This sequence, along with the opening special effects-filled peril/suspense scenario, has to justify a nomination for this video as one of the most ambitious productions I’ve reviewed. This isn’t two actors talking and throwing fake punches in someone’s one-bedroom apartment. This is a real, actual horse chase! (Sorry, I’m just really amazed by this.)
Finally, although I don’t think this video was produced to satisfy any particular fetish (I think it’s really a campy adventure and a throwback to the beloved serial adventure films of a bygone era), there is a hypno scene that, despite my unfamiliarity with the appeal of such things, seems to be really well done. It’s a rather short scene, but well acted and (surprise) features nicely done special effects. Someone more hypno-oriented, with expertise in that area, will have to fill us in on whether this scene might appeal to the hypno fetish crowd. Either way, I found it to be pretty impressive.
As you can see, I’m extremely impressed with this video, but I do have to point out once again that I don’t know if this will satisfy anyone’s fetish needs. It involves an attractive heroine on a dangerous mission but doesn’t necessarily seem interested in featuring any particular fetish material for its own sake (i.e., there’s never a time when The Crimson Skull delivers 20 low blows to Nyoka). With the exception of the short hypno scene and possibly the descending-blade/pendulum sequence, I’m not sure that fetish seekers will find anything here other than a very well made video for general viewership. I recommend it for that reason alone, but not for any fetish purposes.
This is the second video I’ve seen from Cult Retro, and I’ve been very impressed with both efforts (the other having been reviewed here). I should also mention that the episode itself is about 20 minutes long, and then there’s about 12 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and outtakes, as well as a clip from a previously released episode.
