So I finally saw “Athena…”

First off I want to say that for a low budget production trying for an epic film, it’s actually a pretty vailliant effort. The leading lady is indeed beautiful and seems to be an okay actor. She also has the ability to sell action reasonably well.

I do have a few observations though.
1: The disclaimer at the beginning was a little surprising. It reminded me of a similar disclaimer at the front of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video. In that one, the film makers and especially the “king of pop” himself wanted to assure…..someone…..that the use of monster movie imagery in no way reflected a belief in the occult on the part of the film makers. It seems to me, if the film makers could not handle doing a piece of artwork without worrying so much about how people might respond to it, perhaps they ought not to have done it.

The disclaimer at the beginning of “Athena…” felt like the same thing to me. It seems they sought to make a film using (very loosly) greek mythological figures to tell a story. But the film makers were **so** afraid that people watching the thing would thing that **they** might believe in the pagan ideas behind the characters in the film, that they felt they had to bend over backwards to assure everyone that they couldn’t possibly believe that greek mythology was true. Perhaps makers of this film should have not bothered making the film if they were so worried about being associated with the subject matter. Maybe they would have been more comfortable using biblical figures, instead. Surely there’s a bilblical figure that could be used as a faux Wonder Woman. Or else, maybe they could have stood behind their work and just told everybody that it’s just a show and they should really just relax.

2: The bits and pieces of violence that happened off screen were kind of interesting. They were very graak theatre if you think about it.

3. One would think if one were using Athena, there would be wisdom and cunning involved, and not just talki-it-out and duke-it-out.

4. Athena sure got her ass kicked a lot. What happened to the mechano-dude who clobbered Athena just before Persephone tried to stab her again?

I know these are nit picky bits mostly. But I wanted to get them out there in any case.

For those, like me, who ordered this video via snail mail, don’t bother. It’s been months and I still don’t have my copy.

Athena: Goddess of War is a very confused piece of work. As a heroine peril film it offers next to nothing. As a mainstream film it has pretty good production values, pretty good costumes, dozens of actors, many sets – it’s a real movie. A real boring movie. The writing is just terrible. Near the end a military guy actually says “Oh. My. God.” I know that’s how it appeared in the script because I could hear the actor pronouncing the periods. I’m kind of astounded that this thing got made. It clearly cost a lot of money, but who is the intended audience? Mainstream audiences aren’t going to pay to watch this. It’s a mess. The script is terrible, the pacing is terrible, the performances are all over the map. The action, what little there is, is all slo-mo and choppy editing.

I fear that some investors are going to lose their shirts over this thing. It seems like the dude behind Ringdivas wants to be a film maker and managed to cobble together enough money to take his shot with this movie. I wish I had more positive things to say, but it’s a really bad movie.

i like the idea of Cali as the heel. It looks like there’s a fight scene or 2 between her character and Athena. Is that right?

@Teech: Cali is the bad girl this time around.

Ok, let me recollect my ideas here. Lead actress is gorgeous, but is this really a superheroine peril video? Looks very much mainstream movie quality to me. I mean, I spotted F16s in the trailer. Has the industry gone from shooting scenes with 1 girl and 1 middle aged guy in a dimly lit hotel room with a VHS camera on a tripod to featuring F16s in and airstrikes (ok, probably CGI, but it’s the concept!)?
Maybe we’re all spending too much money on these clips/movies 😀
Seriously, this looks very intresting.

What is Cali Danger’s role in the movie? Is there a fight scene between Athena and Cali’s character?

Does Athena spin transforms?

If I am not mistaken, this looks like the beginning of a high concept channel intended to feature strong female character-centred productions. If so, I think they deserve our support – not simply through purchases [obviously] but with feedback and Facebook likes to raise their profile. Whilst only a proportion of their output may have a superheroine peril-centred storyline, I think you can expect elements of this in their productions, and if as Cindy Sparrow implies, they are open to suggestions who knows what can be achieved with the proper funding. If they are seriously looking for scriptwriters and original material, perhaps some of us might be able to contribute our story ideas or manuscripts.

Athena, though known primarily as the goddess of wisdom, was also the goddess of war–specifically, the strategic, tactical aspect of it. Ares, on the other hand, was the god of war in the violent, destructive sense of it–which is why ancient Greeks, before going to war, would pray to Athena and not Ares for victory.

Now you know and knowing is half the battle.

I thought Athena was the goddess of wisdom.
Just sayin’

I got to say I am excited about Maiden Network.

Due to being broke after Christmas it probably won’t be until at least next payday later in the week before I can “take it for a spin”. But I have watched some of their free streaming channel and it is awesome. And I haven’t had any problems with the stream so far.

They definitely need more movies and TV series, but I am sure more are coming and will continue to come. Obviously being brand new they weren’t going to open with 500 things right out of the gate.

I am a fan of action and Superheroine movies with a female lead, and also a fan of Ring Divas. So I think this has a lot of great potential.

MAV: She is bound AOH during this scene man 😉

MAV

@rayman-what do you mean by “standing restrained”? are goons holding her or is she bound in some way? Tx!

@MaidenComics – Thank you for the details I will drop you a line if it makes a noticeable difference.

Downloads would be such a treat though.

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

@Hotcakes well towards the end Athena is stabbed and she dies, she is brought back and faces the mechanical cyborg type dude who towers over her and gives her a beating, short but VERY sweet and he basically leaves her almost dead when her sister comes and gloats but thanks to the gods Athena revives and disappers with her sister.
That i snot quite the end but it is most of the peril except for a col scene earlie ron where Athena is Tasered and captured then whilst standing restrained she takes a few punches and is teased by h egut but again very short but very sweet.

The first three quarters ae long back story and set up but the last quarter is just so c

I think downloadable films would be the best option. Athena looks too good!

Thank you everyone for all of the great feedback on signing up! I just wanted to stop by and welcome Heroine Movie fans to our service and reiterate that as a service the content we put up depends solely on what we feel our customers want to see so please feel free to let us know what you like and dislike. We welcome all feedback.

You can read a personal message to our fans clarifying our vision for the future here: http://maidencomics.com/menu_campaign.html

@rayman: We are implementing High | Med | Low resolution streams so that you can switch from one stream to another if you are struggling with a lower bitrate connection. Our developers have read your feedback and we will begin working on that asap. We are hoping to have this feature complete in our first Maiden Network site update (001) by early mid-next week.

Thank you all.

@ rayman: funny you did mention Gal Gadot. Judging from the trailer, somebody must have liked Man of Steel. A lot 🙂

@rayman – could you summarise the peril content in the movie? thanks

I signed up for a 1 month basic subscription so no sport or fitness mainly for The Athena movie and I did get an email with a New Years Day discount think it was because I am a Ring Divas customer.
My thoughts are the movie is way too long at about 80 minutes it is very slow and although the last 15 minutes are awesome it really needs a cool editor to recut it into an action movie of about 40 to 50 minutes.
I have a 65meg connection and I struggled with streaming from their site but have not spoken to them yet as I only watched the full movie laast night.
I think it is well worth the basic 1 month sign up though just to see what is there and there are some old cult movies too like Isla She Wolf of the SS but sadly it is not a superheroine site at all but if they use the Athena movie as an origin story for a series I will be a regualr member.
The main scene is VERY big budget style and I think Athena knocks what I have seen of Gal Gadot’s WW into a cocked hat , Athena looks stunning in her costume and the actress is gorgeous.

Yeah maybe wait could be good, They are supposedly planning a series of 6 eps I believe called Arthemis, seems a bit similar to Arrow but with a fit Blonde (still casting I believe), they have a comic sample there so that might be cool into the future.

You probably should wait a bit til they have more movies on there. Its still new so not a lot of new movies

@Bob: I don’t think any of the contents would be for download into the future, only the content that was part of Ring Divas, which is a friend company of them I think, sorry for the word “friend” because I really don’t know what would be the term here.

The offer content from Ring Divas (PPD) with the sports package from their subscription, but since it is from Ring Divas it would be available for download there, now the movies and series is a different issue since they seem to be original from the company, so they won’t be available at Ring Divas either.

It seems they want to emulate Netflix or something like that with this, if you have a Roku machine they say you can add their channel there to watch on TV, but be careful because this only can be don in the US, Roku is not friendly outside of the US.

I e-mailed this company regarding a downloadable copy of this feature film and they said it will be available on blu-ray/dvd beginning in march. Im definitely gonna be patient for that because this looks awesome but the company doesn’t appeal to me so much as to make me subscribe.

Looks interesting. Problem for me is that all content is streaming only, can’t download Athena even separate from the streaming channel. Maybe that will change — seems like it’d be an additional revenue source.
