The creative team behind the Next Global Crisis videos has returned with Episode 5, featuring the “Miss Freedom” character from the conclusion of the previous episode. This episode contains many of the features fans have come to expect from Next Global Crisis: good production values (good lighting, editing, acting) and a fairly simple and straightforward storyline. Where previous episodes focused on action and fighting, this one features more psychological torment and mind games played on the heroine. The lack of action might disappoint some viewers, although fans of “mind control” scenarios and psychological torment should get a kick out of Episode 5.
The film begins with a recap of Episode 4, which concluded with the appearance of Miss Freedom. This time, Miss Freedom has been sent to deal with a bad guy named Doctor Truth, a bookish-looking villain who proves to be a worthy adversary for the heroine, though not because of any physical abilities. After threatening Doctor Truth for a while (and delivering a speech about how she is the “guardian of the meek, champion of the mighty, princess of virtue”), she attempts to apprehend him.
However, things do not go as planned. (Of course not.) Doctor Truth suddenly displays the ability to control Miss Freedom’s movements. She is completely powerless against his efforts and has no choice but to obey his commands, cleaning up a mess in his hideout, standing where he tells her to, revealing secret information about herself, and so on.
Essentially, this comprises almost the entire episode after the introduction. There’s a little bit of physical torment, as Doctor Truth wraps some bonds around Miss Freedom, restricting her movements and choking her, but aside from that, the entire focus of the video is on Doctor Truth’s attempts to control the heroine’s actions (which are pretty humiliating for a heroine who clearly thinks so highly of herself).
In my review of Episode 4, many readers responded negatively to the actress who plays Miss Freedom. While I agree that the costume was a bit lacking in the previous episode, I don’t see anything wrong with the actress at all. She proves herself capable of carrying a video on her own here, and I like the humor she brings to the role in the early scenes. In addition, the costume has been greatly improved here and looks good to me.
The end of the episode features a surprise appearance that should excite fans of Next Global Crisis. I don’t know if this means this particular character will return in Episode 6, but this seems to be turning into a tradition for the Next Global Crisis series, so I wouldn’t be surprised.
Overall, I enjoyed the psychological aspects of Episode 5 but would have liked more action. Of course (and this is the case with pretty much every video in this genre), it depends on what you’re looking for in a video like this. In this episode, there is almost no fighting at all. Almost the entire video focuses on the mental anguish of the heroine as the villain controls her and takes away her powers. Just be sure that you’re not expecting an action-packed fighting film along the lines of previous episodes. (Episode 4 was along these lines but featured more physical torment than this one).
On the other hand, the acting is good, there are a few laughs along the way, and I think it’s an interesting scenario. I especially like the surprise at the end and hope it plays out in subsequent videos. What do you think?
