Cult Retro returns with Nyoka the Jungle Girl Fights Back, the sequel to the previous Nyoka video, which I liked a lot (even though it isn’t exactly a fetish-oriented film). This sequel didn’t dazzle me quite as much—probably because it didn’t have a sequence as thrilling as the “pendulum peril” from the previous video—but it’s still highly entertaining and fun.
The movie begins with the main villain, the Crimson Skull, and our heroine, Nyoka, in the midst of a horseback chase sequence. (I’m still really impressed that this video—like its prequel—features a horseback chase sequence. With real, actual horses.) This chase continues for a while, and eventually, the heroine and villain end up in a fist fight. Eventually, we meet a couple of additional characters, including Nyoka’s sister, who apparently has an interest in the mysterious amulet that falls into Nyoka’s possession…
Since Cult Retro isn’t necessarily trying to please a fetish audience, the unfolding of the plot is actually pretty important in this video, so I don’t want to describe the storyline (which makes a review kind of difficult). So I’ll simply discuss the things I enjoyed here. First of all, the production values are pretty high. The acting is good, as are the costumes, editing, etc., and the action and fighting are pretty well done, if somewhat intentionally cheesy (I think), in keeping with the “1940’s serial” aesthetic that this series adheres to (rather well, in my opinion).
In addition to that, the Nyoka videos are pretty lighthearted and feature a lot of humor. In particular, the Crimson Skull is a pretty funny character—egotistical and evil, but surrounded, in his opinion, by incompetence. Also noteworthy: some impressive special effects, including a nice shot in which we see that the action takes place on the edge of a cliff; a gorilla named Satan; a brief fetishy scene where Nyoka is tied up, and a few other twists and surprises.
