Season 2, Side Mission 5 from Next Global Crisis

Season 2, Side Mission 5 from Next Global Crisis For those of you looking for the return of Catherine Marks and the introduction of a super hot red head into the Next Global Crisis universe, I’ve got good news for you. Side Mission 5: Catherine Shredded features both—and a rather vicious beatdown of the heroine.

[Spoilers!] Catherine Marks, using her position as a Red Mist employee, has intercepted a transmission letting her know that a girl that she has never heard of is in danger. She finds the unconscious red head, Georgina Shred, but is discovered by Tony “the Hammer” Reuben. I imagine this film was shot before the clamoring began for NGC to start casting much bigger, more physically imposing villains. While he’s by no means a giant, the actor that plays Tony is a strongly built guy, and I think he does a good job playing the “heavy” in this episode.

Catherine hits him with several punches that he shakes off rather easily. He lands some powerful looking blows of his own to her stomach and slaps her around a bit. The fights is fairly even until there is a break in the action when Georgina suddenly stands up and reveals her true allegiance. As Admiral Ackbar would say, “It’s a trap!”

It turns out that both Tony and Georgina are Red Mist operatives. Cue the smack down! The two villains play a proverbial ping pong match with Catherine and then things start to turn nasty. There’s plenty of additional stomach punches, a raking of nails across Catherine’s face that draws blood, and some additional slapping. It’s one of the more vicious beatdowns that I can recall NGC ever filming, and that’s where my review is going to have to end. This is one of those Side Mission episodes that is more than combat and peril. Although it asks more questions than it answers, there’s a cool story moment at the end that we won’t spoil.

One interesting thing to note about this episode is a complete lack of any use of super powers. Tony is portrayed as strong and tough, but never superhumanly so. I think it’s been established that Catherine has no powers, if you don’t count he ability to look super hot. Same goes for Georgina. It didn’t hinder the film in any way, I quite enjoyed it. It could be that one or possibly more of these characters has powers; they just weren’t on obvious display in this episode.

Everyone should also be on the lookout for a short trailer for the next Side Mission that features Bluebird. God God, Claire Yellowless has always been attractive, but I swear, never more so than she appeared in this trailer. Whatever you’re doing Claire, it’s working. Side Mission 6 can’t come soon enough.

This was an awesome episode. The fight was very good. Heroine held her own at first, started losing, but still tried to fight back a little but was too worn down and then proceeded to take a beating. I would have had her fight back a little while longer when it became 2 vs 1. But it seemed you guys started getting pressed on time and rushed it from there until the epic beatdown. The beatdown in this video was pretty brutal compared to what we have been seeing from NGC and it was very perilous and there’s no complaints from me on that front. I really liked what I saw there. I’d say this is my favorite Side Mission video yet. I think the side missions should get an addition 5 minutes that would help you guys get in more of a complete fight.

Oh and I second what sidekick said about the villain. I am glad NGC brought this guy. He is pretty damn strongly built and was physically imposing. That’s what I want to see from a villain! Plus you had the hot female red head in there too for the ones who like to see F vs F. Nice job of NGC pleasing both crowds IMO.

I can’t remember being this disappointed!

    Bummer! BUMMER! DOUBLE BUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw the title of this video and said “YES! FINALLY!” Catherine Marks Gets Shredded!

First off let me say Catherine is one of my top 2 favorites in this genre and she delivers on all cylinders in this one. She has (in my opinion) the perfect look for a heroine. She and Angel (especially Angel in Season 1 with her cat-suit) have it all. Beauty, sex appeal, an awesome costume, moves, acting skill, and “a look” that for me is simply unmatched in the genre. No offense to all of you out there who love BlueBird, but for my money Angel and Catherine stand alone at the top of the heroine peril rampart.

I actually popped popcorn before watching this episode. To say I couldn’t wait to see it would be like saying Cub fans can’t wait for their team to be in the World Series!

The episode started and I was giddy. Catherine was cornered, double teamed, heck, she was even bleeding. Yes. Yes! YES!!!!

And then it all came crashing down. Catherine gets to get up and walk away! Wait, what kind of ending is that? Jip! Bummer! Boo-Hsss!

This had the potential to be the greatest episode ever produced by any company in the genre. I really thought NGC was going to reward my patience with what I’d always hoped to see. But alas my heart sank into frustration yet again.

I continue to buy ever single episode of NGC before even watching a trailer or reading a review! And I continue to be disappointed. I wait less and less patiently until NGC produces the one-sided-beatdown I’ve been hoping against hope they will one day produce. I’m starting to think it will never happen.

I have 3 opinions about this video.
1 – Next Global Crisis does some of the best fighting in this genre.
2 – The first 2/3rds of this video is by far the best side mission, and maybe the best video in The NGC library.
3 – The last 1/3rd of this video totally disappoints.
Should of called the video “Catherine Gets a Scare”, or “Catherine Gets Ruffed Up”, or “We’re Gunna Make You Think Catherine Getts Shredded, But Then Let Her Go At The Last Minute”.

  • Oct. 6, 2012 at 10:05 pm

Haha very funny reviews. I do agree it was misleading but I didnt think much of it. I guess it really would have been nice to see her costume ripped up during a beating though. NGC heroines dont show enough skin.

But I thought this video was AWESOME. I loved it. I think Catherine is my new favorite from these guys, not sure yet, but man do I love her reactions. She can sell a beating better than Bluebird in my opinion. She’s perfect. I love how she has no powers too that means shes more likely to take a beating. The stomach punches were great here, she sold them perfectly too. I love how she lets us know her ribs are hurting. Things like that HARDLY EVER HAPPEN in these videos. Adding official injuries like that need to be done more often, it makes the fight more interesting. I hope it continues @NGC. Hopefully this specific rib injury carries out til the next time we see her.

Misleading title and description as it had me thinking that Catherine would literally get her costume shredded and cut up a bit, but for $9.99 I am not going to complain about it. Great beatdown of a hot heroine and I hope we see more of Catherine as I love her simple black catsuit and mask, such a simple but sexy costume and she’s a great actress.

One minor thing I noticed, the scene where she’s getting punched back and forth between the two villains, it literally looked like she was jogging into each punch intentionally instead of being bounced back and forth. Looked a little unbelievable there.

  • Oct. 6, 2012 at 11:25 pm

@Dangerous David Dicks: ***POSSIBLE SPOILERS*** I’d say Catherine Marks got a scare in so far as she had the crap beat out of her, and was about 5 seconds from death. I’m not sure I would’ve liked to have had that scene carried out to it’s logical conclusion. Certainly wouldn’t have minded a capture scenario like with Celestia in episode 4, but plot twists are fun too.

@NGC: You may have had no idea that hot, red-headed bad girls, with a touch of crazy are one of my favorite things in this life…but thank you(and Victoria Broom).

  • Oct. 6, 2012 at 11:33 pm

NGC That you have produced fantastic chapter, for me it was the best chapter of side mission.

I love Catherine Marks, for me it together with miss victory are my favorite heroines, promise that you are planning more stories for her.

congratulations on the great job NGC

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 3:24 am

I’m glad this was broadly enjoyed. I hope I’m not out of line by asking people to put *SPOILERS* in their comments before you know, spoiling. It didn’t happen this time but it would be great in future because this release is still on discount so most people still can’t buy it.

The title pertained to one of the villains – ‘Georgina Shred’ and an injury Catherine sustains. The ending is integral to the whole season plot if you listen to it and I think in the end you will see the sense.

I am glad people like Catherine and I was pleased with both of these villains. I take it you also got to see the teaser for the next one?

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:29 am

Catherine Marks is one of my favorites in NGC right now with Lady Victory, Angel, and Shadowstar. Like I said before, this was a great video. But I do echo the part about the fight/beatdown needing to be longer. That ending was a total buzzkill *spoilers* starting from the phone call, and it took extremely long. Especially when everything before it was so great. It kind of halted the momentum. Thats why I think these videos should be a few minutes longer, OR simply dedicate more time to the fight/beatdown.

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 8:19 am

Loved Catherine in that mask, so hot and fiesty. Her acting is so good you really believe she’s for real – her inner thoughts, her trepidation about the mission, her courage and all her perfect reactions during the fight, all made her believable and sexy.

Also, the villains did an amazing job and had some chemistry together. Where have you been hiding that redhead, she was simply superb as a sadistic villain. She really seemed to get, how do I put this, turned on by the punishment she was both giving and receiving. I loved the way she sucked her finger after scratching Catherines face so badly. I even liked the end, for me the story is cool and I like the way it seems not everything is black and white.

But oh my god, I must agree with SIDEKICK, Bluebird looks crazy hot in the upcoming video. It looks suitably intense and I officially LOVE the new costume now, it really shows off her long legs and trim physique better than ever before. Can’t wait!

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 10:12 am

Great work! as always.Brilliant performance by all,. Great direction and i love the ending i dont know what people want…. By now i think that we all know how the videos of NGC works. They have to be coherent with a plot, i think that seeing a serious plot with believeble characters makes the peril scenes more intense.

    Waiting for bluebird now!

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 11:35 am

The Bluebird preview looked intense. I really hope the video is exactly what it looks like, which is an intense beat down for bluebird from the moment I press play til the end of the video. Ok well maybe not as soon as I press play but hopefully a short minute after lol. @NGC You are on a winning streak in my eyes, I really hope it continues.

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 12:10 pm

Let me start my review by saying that Catherine Marks is my co-favorite character in the NGC Universe (tied with Angel). Way back when episode 2, season 2 came out and all the BlueBird fans were gushing over Claire Yellowese, I remember thinking are they blind? Rachel Warren’s Catherine Marks character made BlueBird fade into the scenery for me. I should also mention that I’m another one of those people that are interested in this genre because its the only place I can see the heroine lose. Mainstream stuff has some peril but you know the heroine will never lose.
Anyway, I have to admit I got a partial just from reading the title of this episode. Although, I didn’t expect Catherine to be stripped or her outfit shredded, that’s not NGC style, I thought she’d at least get destroyed and possibly killed. Well, I don’t have to tell you I loved the first half of this video. Rachel Warren is simply perfect. But I, like some others, was totally bummed out about two thirds of the way through when the episode just seems to throw cold water on me. I lost my chubby faster than if I saw Rossane Barr at a nudist colony.
This would have been the greatest episode of all time, by any studio if The Hammer would have cold-cocked Catherine and then tossed her over his shoulder and carried her out of the building. Then, if you needed her to escape, you could have done a scene after the credits in which Catherine is seen running out of the villian’s lair and the bad guy and bad girl argue over how she escaped. Or even just a phone call to the bad guy where he says “What, let her go? … Okay…”
Anyway, I know a bunch of people on this forum are arguing that oh, its for the plot. To that I say PLOT SMLOT! I can’t tell you boo about last season’s plot. But I can tell you I often go back and rewatch season 1 episode 2 and watch Angel getting knocked out several different ways. And I love it. Although, I argue even that episode which is my GOLD STANDARD as of mow could have ended with an even more complete defeat.
Overall, this IS a great episode for the money. But man, for a minute there I thought we were going to get a new Heroine Movie GOLD STANDARD!

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 12:48 pm

^ Season 1 Episode 2 is my gold standard as well. That’s what really put NGC on my radar as well as most of their other fans I imagine. For some reason they don’t go to that formula often though…

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 1:18 pm

Ditto on Season 1 Episode 2. Well done, but Tim Caine has said it very well for what the best approach would have been.

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Personally I liked this episode, the set up was perfect.

The finish was actually pretty intimidating, which I love it.
At some point I look for the heroine to get revenge but to be let go like that, should really break your spirit, that has to affect her month from now on.

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:15 pm

Season 1 Episode 2 was an important film for us but it’s quite an interesting one to bring up as the actual ending of that is more in line with this side mission than perhaps memory serves. The situation is a bit different but the swerve is there in both of them.

Another point about Season 1 Episode 2 is that if it hadn’t ended the way it did then you would not have had Season 1 Episode 8 or 9, or indeed Season 2 Episode 6… and something else to come. This side mission will cause similar ripples that I think you will enjoy. I’m not making it up as I go along, I wrote the plot for this 18 months ago, I remember where I was when I did it.

  • Oct. 7, 2012 at 9:04 pm

@Tim Caine: “…To that I say PLOT SMLOT!!”

To THAT I say, I disagree with you…a lot. I think that the presence of an interesting and coherent overarching storyline intensifies everything that happens in any individual episode.

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 9:09 am

I’ll second kingles’ comment. I respect NGC for telling the stories they want to tell and not trying to satisfy every micro-fetish in the genre. I’ve enjoyed the videos of many different producers over the years, but no one in the business has a better body of work than NGC.

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 1:36 pm

@Kingles – I knew I’d get flack for that comment. I’m fine with an over all grand story line and blah blah blah blah… But if you give me my choice between great plot and a great beatdown, I’ll take the great beatdown everytime. I can get great plot watching 24. But it doesn’t give me a hard-on to see Keifer Sutherland taking down the bad-guys.
What I’m saying is that I can’t hardly follow the plot anyway. The last time I saw Catherine it was in an episode that came out the first week of February. It’s 8 months later, I don’t keep track of the plot that long. Again, I have no flipping idea what the plot was last season. But I know I go back and rewatch episode 2 of season 1 all the time.
So, it’s not that I’m anti-plot or anti-storyline, but NGC asks for constructive feedback and my constructive feedback is that I can live with holes all over-the place in the plot and simpler storylines if it means I get to see more or better beatdowns.

@Bert – I respect NGC too. As a matter of fact I love their stuff. I also love that they appear to really try to add in more and more stuff the fans (us) seem to be asking for. I love that about them too because that can’t be easy.
I agree they have a great body of work. But I also think Catherine Marks has a great body (okay, bad pun) and I’d like to see it destroyed, and tossed over the shoulder of the bad guy, then carried off the set. If that means in order to make their plot work they need some cheesy cut scene that is hap-hazardly thrown together at the last minute, I’m cool with that. Once again, 8 months for now when we see Catherine again, I won’t remember what was going on in the story anyway. I’ll just be hoping for another interesting defeat of one of my favorite heroines.

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 1:45 pm

Another great episode. What makes NGC special is that you never quite know what to expect : just as it looks like Catherine’s dead meat, the phone call not only rescues her, it flips the entire season into new territory. Which means ( I guess ) we get to see more of Catherine – I’m not complaining : )

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 2:19 pm

@Fabio – I too hope the action is intense as it looks but I hope they don’t just go straight to the beatdown, I want to see Bluebird being her usual confident cocky and badass self at least for a little bit until the tables turn and she realises the danger she is in. Without a little setup all the peril in the world is wasted. SuperHEROINES: the clue is in the name!

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 3:13 pm

“I agree they have a great body of work. But I also think Catherine Marks has a great body (okay, bad pun)…”

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 3:16 pm

Oops, finger trouble. What I meant to say was – don’t apologize for the pun, it’s almost impossible not to go there!

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 5:24 pm

I think this is all okay. From very early on we’ve had people who get everything to keep in contact with the story, and others who dip in from time to time. I’d like to think that you will broadly be entertained whichever video you buy even if the backstory or motivations don’t interest you. It’s a pretty tough balancing act and we don’t always get it right. I suppose this one was pretty important for a side mission story-wise, whereas some will be more straight up fights that are just a nod to what is going on.

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Another solid and enjoyable release from NGC! Great new characters (nothing beats a crazy redhead…especially one that looks like that!), Catherine was once again stunning and sold the action like a star, and an interesting ending which leads me wondering where things are heading for all parties! Only small issue was the selling of the back and forth punches – it looked forced, as if she was running torwards them lol (if you want to see how that’s done, check out Claire Yellowlees in TR17!). That small thing aside, NGC continue their purple patch of recent quality releases!

In regards the whole ‘story or not story’ matter, I think NGC seems to have a nice balance between the two with the episodes, side missions and the separate FSS universe. Sure, I love a good old straight forward, no messing around beatdown as much as anyone, but yeah, I also like a gripping story to also keep my interest at times.

Oh, and can’t wait for the next side mission! I agree with Sidekick – Claire Yellowlees seems to look more and more gorgeous with every new release!!! Knowing my luck though, NGC will kill her off soon! I’m assuming it will be out in two weeks?

  • Oct. 8, 2012 at 10:33 pm

My jaw literally dropped open when ***SPOILER*** Victoria Broom sashayed back towards Catherine Marks giggling and biting her upper lip. Echoing earlier comments– perfect blend of crazy and S-M queen. Loved her!

  • Oct. 9, 2012 at 2:42 am

@Tim Caine: Not trying to give you too much flack. It’s not like you’re wrong. Just that for ME, it is a good thing that there is a logical plot tying past, present, and future videos together. Just the mere fact that what happens in this latest video effects what will happen in the future…that actions actually have consequences…heightens everything for me. Of course opinions will vary on that…it would actually be kind of wierd if they didn’t.

  • Oct. 11, 2012 at 11:30 pm

I thought this was the best trailer you guys had in a while,
its good to see some real action.

  • Oct. 12, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Kind of tardy to the party I know, but I have to put my thoughts in.
I am not really sure why people are complaining about the ending. Catherine gets pretty much dominated the entire time and the ending is no different. She was utterly defeated and saved only by some mysterious phone call. I really liked it and have to say it is probably my favorite of the side missions thus far. Keep up the good work!

  • Oct. 19, 2012 at 4:17 pm

In regards Side Mission 6, I just wanted to say a quick ‘OH MY GOD!’.

  • Oct. 19, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Couldn’t agree more Mark. Spoiler free review coming this weekend

  • Oct. 19, 2012 at 5:31 pm

I saw the trailer and I liked it. Will buy it when I get home tonight.

  • Oct. 19, 2012 at 5:32 pm

    Side Mission 6 I mean. 😉
