Not much time to comment, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. I agree with some other comments here that the intensity of the combat wasn’t as high as other recent entries, but lots of submission and choke holds, even a grapple, which suits me fine. I thought Spectrum was at or near the top of her form (and her form is the tops, if you get my drift). Celestia seemed a bit tired at times, which stands to reason, but may have led to the slower pace of the proceedings. Confession: the first time I watched this I had… Read more »

When Celestia ran her, oh so articulate, mouth off at the MC I seriously wondered if she was ‘on the side of the angels’, then I got it. It was a nice bit of reverse psychology…
I caught the glance between Spectrum and Celestia too….and I have to wonder, are they being set up for a fall?
After all, no plan ever survived the battle field.

What do you make of both Spectrum and Celestia wanting to spare Bluebird? I personally don’t understand that. Spectrum doesn’t know Bluebird. She came to the scene a full year AFTER Bluebird’s disappearance at the hand of Alaric and couldn’t possible have any attachment to the tragic heroine. Celestia is even stranger. This “new” Celestia (which is different than the Celestia from seasons 1-4) also doesn’t know Bluebird. Or at least not the Bluebird we all know. And even if you assume this is the old Celestia, least we forget, the last interaction between the two of them was a… Read more »

According to Sister Fate’s bio on the NGC site, she and the Crown Prince have been devising’…deviant punishments for the Blue Beauty over several millennia”. In Broken Wings Sister Fate said something about Bluebird becoming a testament to failure.
It’s possible that Bluebird’s punishments have taken place in front of the other captives so Celestia and Spectrum’s sympathy might be genuine, or they may think that Bluebird, having lost her memories of anything before Sister Fate might be a lost cause.
It seems that Bluebird’s tragedy isn’t going to end anytime soon…or maybe ever.

Reading Darkwrath’s post, the thought occurred to me…..I wonder if we won’t find out that Spectrum is the reincarnation of a past heroine that has long left the NGC universe….maybe Powerstar or Golden Hornet…..hmmm….

I’ve been offline this week, so I’m just now getting to respond, but my thinking is along the same lines as Darkwrath’s final suggestion. Since sparing Bluebird the lash means she isn’t assembled with the others, it could mean she won’t be part of whatever plan Celestia and Spectrum have going, and my guess is that the reason for that is that they believe she’s too far gone to be any help to their escape/resistance. So yes, Bluebird is left in captivity once again. Practically speaking, it may be the case that the actress playing Bluebird just isn’t available anymore… Read more »

I thought the same thing Dr (about the wonderful actress who plays Bluebird).
In my head I’ve embraced a reality where we don’t see her again (although recent posts on the NGC blog give me hope).
Even if we only find out about Bluebird’s fate (no pun intended) ‘off screen’ I’m on tenter hooks to know what happens.

I believe she moved to Australia? (IIRC). It’s amazing to me that she has still been involved at all!

Lots of nice character moments here, and an important element of the story has (or is about to) come together. It’s probably a bit too early to discuss the story elements, suffice to say I think something big is just over the horizon. It’s the story and character elements that I enjoy, maybe even more so than the action, and in that light this release doesn’t disappoint. There’s some interesting turns of phrase used here, the MC states that Celestia is “as predictable as the stopped clocks in the 7th Dimension”. Hmmm, is that how they control time and also… Read more »

Well I certainly liked this but as a general rule, I’m going to like 95% of things with Spectrum in it. Much like I said with Starshot, it can be a video of her cleaning windows and I’ll buy and probably like it. At the same time, this is not amazing. It’s got a couple of not so great moments and the fight itself is at the tail end of what I consider acceptable. Particularly in a world where fights like Iron Curtain, Showery with a Risk of Kidnap and even Welcome to Forever exist. My main issue is that… Read more »

I love Spectrum. She occupies first, second and third position as my favorite heroine of all time. That’s mostly because I sincerly believe she is the best actress in this genre in portraying their character. She is Spectrum and Spectrum is her and I have literally re-watched moments of her just talking. Yes I’m a little obsessed here but I appreciate great acting when I see it. I also love seeing Spectrum in peril. It is a great thing to watch. But it’s a bit demoralizing to see your favorite character, powerful heroine she’s supposed to be, flat out unable… Read more »

I completely understand your point of view here. There are two other heroines about which I feel the same way (I’ve written about both before) so I get how twisted up inside you can feel when you love watching a favorite losing, but don’t want to see her as a loser. I’m very pleased with this trailer, though, because it appears that the action is moving back toward the heroines as reluctant combatants pressured into performing by threats and selfless motives. It’s fun to watch the heroines trash talk each other and boast, but for me it’s important that they… Read more »

“love watching a favorite losing, but don’t want to see her as a loser”. Always amazing Dr_Mabuse how you can sum up what I want to say in one phrase whereas it takes me whole paragraphs. But that’s the essence of it for me. I don’t mind her losing. But all the time becomes kinda tough. Then again that’s the point of the genre right? To watch beautiful heroines be defeated. I guess that makes me (us?) the crazy one.

This looks great and this is a perfect length trailer. The usual ones are too short IMO. This is just long enough to make me buy it!

You’re meant to have mansplained to the actress that shooting an action film while pregnant was unwise of her. Certainly she, being a mere woman, would be incapable of making a rational decision about the workings and abilities of her own body.

Not sure if a person of a different gender thinking about that person’s wellbeing is a sexist act. As a Golden State Warriors fan, I would equate it to the need for someone to have told KD to sit out game five for his own wellbeing. In both cases, the person in question may have a need for outside perspective. I am not suggesting the actress in this case isn’t thinking about it, but I loathe the idea that one can only accept advice from people of the same gender. That said, I do appreciate your gesture of avoiding the… Read more »

Pretty quick to accuse Beast of being a sexist pig huh.

I didn’t accuse Beast of being a sexist pig, I accused him of mansplaining. As for being quick to do it, there have already been two previous threads discussing that actress being pregnant, so there was no reason to take Beast’s post at anything other than face value.
